State Bureau of Investigations prosecutes over 100 people for environmental crimes last year
KYIV. Jan 31 (Interfax-Ukraine) – In 2022, the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) sent materials to court on charges of 126 people with crimes against the environment, and the amount of damage exceeded UAH 150 million.
"Despite the war in Ukraine, the fight against crimes against the environment remained a priority area of work… In 2022, the SBI continued to expose and investigate the crimes of dishonest officials and their accomplices, which caused significant damage to the environment and the state budget," the Bureau said on its Telegram channel on Tuesday.
According to the SBI, last year, the SBI filed 77 indictments against 126 people in court.
According to the report, in 2022, the State Bureau of Investigations carried out pretrial investigations in 641 criminal proceedings on offenses against the environment, and 108 people received suspicion as part of the investigation of environmental crimes.
"The damage found in completed criminal proceedings is more than UAH 150 million. During the pretrial investigation, UAH 29.8 million has already been reimbursed. In total, to compensate for the damage, the State Bureau of Investigations initiated the seizure of the suspects’ property valued at UAH 71 million," the ministry said in a statement.
According to the State Bureau of Investigations, a pretrial investigation into illegal logging in Vinnytsia region was completed, which caused damage of UAH 87 million, a case against an inspector of the State Fisheries Agency, who contributed to the illegal catching of beluga and stellate sturgeon in Odesa region, has been submitted to court. Also, according to the agency, a case of large-scale illegal logging in Zakarpattia region was exposed, causing UAH 18 million in damage to the state. In addition, the State Bureau of Investigations suspects an official from the State Agency for the Management of the Exclusion Zone of facilitating illegal logging near Chornobyl.
