Some 55% of Ukrainians support the law on service in Ukrainian – poll
KYIV. Nov 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Some 55% of Ukrainians support the provision of the "language law" on service in the Ukrainian language, while maintaining the possibility of serving clients in other languages at their request, according to the results of a survey by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation together with the sociological service of the Razumkov Center.
At the same time, 21% do not support such a norm, and almost 18% of Ukrainians are still indifferent.
Most of those who support compulsory service in the state language are in the Western and Central regions – 74% and 62% (11% and 14% do not support the norm, respectively). In the South and East of Ukraine, there is approximately the same ratio of those who support and do not support this rule of law: in the South, 33% support it, while 37% do not; in the East, 38% support it, and almost 33% do not. In these regions, there are also about 30% of undecided respondents.
According to the survey, 59% of Ukrainians also note that, according to their observations, over the past six months, the use of the Ukrainian language in the service and trade sectors has increased (26% said it was slightly more, and 33% say that it was significantly more). Almost a third of citizens (31%) did not notice any changes in the frequency of using the Ukrainian language.
A nationwide survey was conducted from July 29 to August 4, 2021 in all regions of Ukraine with the exception of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The survey was conducted by the method of personal interviews at the place of residence of the respondents. A total of 2,019 respondents aged 18 and over were surveyed. The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3%. The survey was funded by the MATRA project of the Royal Netherlands Embassy.
