Some 42,000 Ukrainians receive status of temporarily displaced persons in Sweden – Plakhotniuk
KYIV. Aug 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Some 42,000 citizens of Ukraine received the status of temporarily displaced persons in Sweden, of which 13,000 are children, Ukrainian Ambassador to Sweden Andriy Plakhotniuk said.
"To date, the number of Ukrainians who were forced to end up in Sweden and have the status of temporarily displaced persons, using the directive of the European Union is approximately 42,000 people and among them – about 13,000 children," Plakhotniuk said at an online briefing at the Ukraine media center in Lviv on Friday.
According to the Ambassador, the number of Ukrainian citizens who temporarily moved to Sweden is less than the relevant authorities of this country expected.
Plakhotniuk noted that in addition to monetary assistance, the Swedish government is doing a lot to help Ukrainians find work, for Ukrainian children to master programs in schools.
"According to Swedish law, children should study only according to the Swedish curriculum… Swedish companies, volunteers, and local authorities are doing a lot, which organize many summer camps for our children so that they can have a good rest and go to school in September," Plakhotniuk said.
He also noted that appropriate assistance is provided for medical and social security and "even museums are open to Ukrainians for free."
Plakhotniuk also said that the Swedish government has provided for changes to the budget in the amount of 10 billion Swedish kronor to address the urgent needs of Ukrainians temporarily residing in the country.
