Some 361 transplantations performed in Ukraine in 2022 – UTCC Director General
KYIV. Dec 21 (Interfax-Ukraine) – In 2022, despite the suspension of transplantations, 361 transplantations were performed in Ukraine against 316 such operations in 2021, Director General of the Ukrainian Transplant Coordination Center (UTCC) Dmytro Koval has said.
"After February 24, for several months, for obvious reasons, transplantations were not performed anywhere in Ukraine, but we managed to adapt and establish new working and organizational processes. Approximately at the beginning of summer, we started performing transplantations again. To date, more organ transplants than in 2021 have already been done – 361 transplants were performed," he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
At the same time, Koval said that despite the war, the rules and approaches to transplantation have not changed in any way.
"Neither military nor civilian victims of hostilities are considered donors. The relative increase in the number of donors is due to the fact that in different regions the procedure for diagnosing brain death is being introduced, which is crucial to cover the needs of transplantation and save human lives," he said.
