Some 106 Ukrainian medical workers killed since beginning of full-scale invasion, 33 of them while on duty – Liashko
KYIV. Feb 23 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Some 106 medical workers were killed over a year since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 33 of them lost their lives while on duty in hospitals, Health Minister of Ukraine Viktor Liashko has said.
He also said that 1,106 healthcare facilities were damaged since the beginning of the war.
“They suffered damages of varying severity – from broken windows to completely devastated walls and floors. Unfortunately, 174 facilities cannot be restored and they need to be built anew,” the minister said.
Liashko also said that the public health infrastructure was most affected by the Russian aggression in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions.
“There are damages at healthcare facilities in Mykolaiv region, the situation in Kherson region, where medical establishments are destroyed weekly, is a horror. One of the latest examples is the destruction of Kherson Blood Center. We have to change the route of a patient to medical aid,” he said.
Liashko also said that despite the active hostilities the restoration process at the healthcare facilities damaged by the aggressor is underway. The Health Ministry coordinates the construction of 15 demolished facilities, particularly in Sumy and Chernihiv regions. Donors are involved in the process.
The strategies for the restoration of the destroyed hospitals in the frontline and de-occupied territories and the development of the healthcare facilities which host the largest number of internally displaced persons are being developed, the minister said.
