Shmyhal, Truss discuss strengthening strategic partnership between Ukraine, UK
KYIV. Sept 21 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The development of bilateral cooperation, preparations for the heating season and the restoration of Ukraine were discussed by Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and Prime Minister of the UK Liz Truss.
"The parties touched upon the issue of intensifying the supply of weapons to protect Ukraine and strengthening sanctions against Russian oil and gas. In the context of diversifying energy sources and preparing for the heating season, the prime ministers of Ukraine and the UK discussed the need to increase their own gas production, in particular in Ukraine," the press service of the government said.
The prime minister expressed gratitude to his counterpart for the UK’s readiness to provide Ukraine with the next tranche of $500 million through the World Bank for the purchase of gas.
"We are also interested in attracting British business to the development of gas production in Ukraine. We expect the UK government to make the necessary decisions to insure British business in Ukraine against military risks," Shmyhal said.
The parties also raised the issue of holding the next Conference on the restoration of Ukraine in the UK. In particular, the prime ministers agreed to create a working group that will prepare for the event in 2023.
"I am convinced that the UK will be our main partner not only in the armed rebuff of Russia, but also in reconstruction. We appreciate your country’s readiness to play a leading role in the post-war renewal of Ukraine," the prime minister said.
Truss, for her part, assured that the UK’s policy of supporting Ukraine and boosting assistance remains unchanged.
