Shmyhal, Macron open meeting on safety and security of civilian nuclear facilities in armed conflicts

KYIV. Sept 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A high-level meeting on the safety and security of civil nuclear facilities in armed conflicts was opened in New York by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and French President Emmanuel Macron.

"Together with French President Emmanuel Macron, we opened an event in New York on the safety and security of civilian nuclear facilities in armed conflicts. It was also attended by the High Representative of the EU, the Foreign Minister of Germany and the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the UK, and the Director General of the IAEA Rafael Grossi," Shmyhal wrote on his Telegram channel Wednesday evening.

The event is aimed at determining the procedure for the demilitarization of the Zaporizhia NPP and the territory around it.

"Our position is that control over this territory should be completely with Ukraine," Shmyhal said.

Grossi said that the IAEA intends to increase its mission to cover all monitoring needs at the plant. In addition, he said that the continuation of Russia’s control over the ZNPP is very dangerous, and also stressed that the IAEA is at the plant at the invitation of the Ukrainian government and cooperates only with Ukraine and the Ukrainian regulator.
