Shmyhal discusses European integration process of Ukraine with President of European Council Michel
KYIV. Jan 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal met on Thursday with President of the European Council Charles Michel, during which the interlocutors discussed Ukraine’s further movement towards the European Union in the context of the 24th Ukraine-EU Summit, the press service of the Ukrainian government reports.
It is noted that Denys Shmyhal and Charles Michel, in particular, discussed defense support to strengthen the Armed Forces of Ukraine and protect the Ukrainian sky, as well as further financial assistance from European partners.
"Thanks to the EU for the financial support: first EUR 3 billion of the EUR 18 billion macro-financial assistance package arrived this week," the prime minister said.
He also expressed hope for further joint efforts to increase pressure on Russia.
According to Shmyhal, the confiscation of Russian assets, the creation of a special international tribunal and the strengthening of sanctions against Russia are priority steps in this direction. The head of the Ukrainian government also pointed out the need to impose sanctions against Russia’s nuclear energy sector.
"The leadership of Russia must pay for the crimes against Ukraine. And the confiscated assets of Russia should be used for restoration, including destroyed housing," he stressed.
In turn, the President of the European Council noted that the EU would continue to support Ukraine.
