Shmyhal calls on UN to be more actively involved in issue of safe evacuation of people

KYIV. April 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal discussed with Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres the issues of organizing humanitarian corridors, providing support for internally displaced persons and rebuilding infrastructure.

"Being unable to destroy the national unity of Ukraine, the enemy proceeds to acts of genocide in the temporarily occupied territories. Ukraine will continue to insist that the International Criminal Court make appropriate decisions on the crimes committed by the Russian army in Ukraine," Shmyhal was quoted by the government’s press service after the meeting.

The prime minister noted that Ukraine’s economic losses due to the war are growing daily, and called on the UN to join the country’s reconstruction process, in particular, by providing technical support in mine clearance.

During the conversation, Shmyhal thanked the UN for supporting Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced persons.

At the same time, he stressed that the UN must take the lead in ending the war and mitigating its consequences.

"He called on the organization to become more actively involved in the issue of unblocking the opening of humanitarian corridors for the safe evacuation of civilians from the temporarily occupied territories," the message says.

Shmyhal said that the situation in Mariupol requires immediate intervention.

According to him, the UN should take all possible measures to influence Russia to comply with its agreements on providing humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of people to territories controlled by Ukraine, in order to prevent the deportation of Ukrainians to the Russian Federation.

In turn, Guterres noted that the UN is making every effort to evacuate people, in particular from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol.
