Seven Panamax vessels with coal going to Ukraine, there will be no blackouts – Zelensky

KYIV. Nov 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine is successfully overcoming a current situation in the energy sector with a shortage of coal, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

"There will be no shortage, but there will be seven Panamax vessels, which are already on their way and will arrive at Ukrainian ports in the near future," Zelensky said in a video message posted on Facebook on Monday.

According to the President, coal, which will be delivered by sea, will completely cover the needs in the energy sector by the end of the year.

If necessary, the demand will be completely closed until the end of the entire heating season.

"We do not buy coal from separatists […] We do not pay and will not pay those who do not recognize our independence and we are taking the first step towards full energy independence of Ukraine," the President added.

Zelensky also noted that before winter, the state prepared nuclear power, which will operate at full capacity after the expansion of the reactor fleet.

"In recent weeks, two additional power units have been launched – at Rivne and Zaporizhia nuclear power plants [NPPs]. Another unit of Zaporizhia NPP will be launched by the end of November," the President said.

The Panamax vessel can carry 60,000-80,000 tonnes of coal. In early November, a senior government source told Interfax-Ukraine that Ukrainian ports would soon accept five ships with US-imported coal totaling approximately 280,000 tonnes: four for DTEK and one for state-owned Centrenergo.
