Senators from both parties pressing Pentagon to send F-16 jets to Ukraine – media

KYIV. March 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A group of bipartisan senators are pressuring the Pentagon to send F-16 jets to Ukraine, saying modern fighters “could prove to be a game changer on the battlefield,” Politico said.

According to the publication, a new impetus to this process was given by a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, organized by Senator Mark Kelly (Arizona), from a group of eight senators.

“After speaking with U.S., Ukrainian, and foreign leaders working to support Ukraine at the Munich Security Conference last month, we believe the U.S. needs to take a hard look at providing F-16 aircraft to Ukraine. This would be a significant capability that could prove to be a game changer on the battlefield,” Politico said. According to senators, F-16 fighter jets can give Kyiv an advantage, as Moscow’s full-scale invasion is in its second year.

The senators asked Austin to provide them with assessments of the factors needed to successfully transfer the F-16 to Ukraine by the end of the week.

The panel welcomed reports that two Ukrainian pilots had arrived in the USA to assess fighter skills at Morris Air National Guard Base in Tucson, in Kelly’s home state, which they called “a critical step in evaluating” their F-16 readiness.
