Scholz on transfer of Leopard tanks to Ukraine: We never do something alone
KYIV. Jan 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Germany will continue to provide strong military support to Ukraine, but Germany "never does anything alone," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, answering a question about the supply of German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
"Regarding Ukraine, as I mentioned in my speech, and I will repeat it again: Germany is one of the greatest supporters. Yes, the United States is doing the most, and this is not surprising, they have invested $800 billion in the defense budget. This is much more than all the EU member states together. And even more than Germany has in the budget," Scholz said at the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland) on Wednesday.
He stressed that Germany had previously changed its geopolitical strategy and decided to support Ukraine not only financially, but also by providing military assistance. According to the Chancellor, after the United States and the United Kingdom, Germany is the leader in this issue. "And we will continue to support just as much," Scholz said.
"But we are strategically intertwined with our friends and partners. We work with them together. We are discussing with them. We never do something ourselves, but together with others, especially the United States," he stressed.
The German Chancellor added that Ukrainians can count on Germany’s support in their courageous struggle.
"It is also clear that we will avoid a war between Russia and NATO," Scholz said.
At the same time, he said that Germany and all countries supporting Ukrainians want "Ukraine to be able to become an independent, free democratic state that will join the EU."
"This is what we are doing," Scholz summed up.
