SBU reports detention of blogger Shariy in Spain

KYIV. May 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Pro-Russian blogger Anatoliy Shariy, who is suspected of high treason by the SBU, was detained in Spain, according to the Security Service of Ukraine.

"Spanish law enforcement authorities detained A. Shariy on May 4, 2022. This was made possible thanks to close cooperation between the Security Service of Ukraine and the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO), international partners and as a result of a multi-level special operation by Ukrainian law enforcers," a message posted Thursday on the SBU’s Telegram channel reads.

The report notes that this detention is "further evidence that every traitor to Ukraine will sooner or later receive the punishment he deserves, it is inevitable."

The SBU reminds that the Ukrainian Security Service suspects Shariy of committing crimes under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Article 111 (high treason), Article 161 (violation of equality of citizens on the basis of their race, nationality, religious beliefs, disability and other characteristics).

"According to SBU investigators, he carried out illegal activities to the detriment of the national security of Ukraine in the information sphere. There is reason to believe that Anatoliy Shariy acted at the request of foreign structures," the report says.

The SBU stressed that the evidence of the investigation was confirmed by a number of expert studies, which established that in interviews and speeches Shariy had facts of his subversive activities against Ukraine.
