SBU initiates proceedings on elections to Russian State Duma held in Crimea
KYIV. Sept 20 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Investigators of the State Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) have initiated criminal proceedings on the fact of illegal elections to the Russian State Duma, which were recently held on the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimea, the SBU press center said on Monday.
"All those involved in this pseudo-voting are being documented: both from among the official representatives of Russian and among the citizens of Ukraine, who, in violation of domestic legislation, helped the aggressor state," the SBU said in a statement.
The proceedings are initiated on the grounds of a crime under Part 1 of Article 111 (high treason) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment for a term of 12 to 15 years.
The SBU provided the NSDC with materials for the imposition of sanctions against the organizers and participants of elections to the Russian authorities on the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimea. In particular, we are talking about 33 candidates for the State Duma of Russia and 54 members of territorial election commissions.
"And last Friday, on the initiative of the SBU, the NSDC made a relevant decision," the SBU said.
"Throughout the entire electoral process, the State Security Service of Ukraine collected materials regarding the persons organizing and participating in these races. After all, they do not just legitimize the occupation power, but pose a threat to the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine and are complicit in an international crime," the SBU press center said, citing its Head Ivan Bakanov.
The SBU said that since 2014 Russia has held a number of elections in the region, including: voting for candidates to the legislative agencies of Crimea and Sevastopol; municipal elections for the formation of illegal authorities in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine; elections of deputies of the Russian State Duma; presidential elections in Russia.
