SBU exposes scheme of 'protection' of smuggling at Boryspil airport
KYIV. Sept 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Officials of the customs post of the Boryspil Airport, who passed the competitive selection and meet the criteria of the "reformed customs", systematically demanded and received illegal benefits from entrepreneurs, according to the Security Service of Ukraine.
"The attackers imposed a ‘tribute’ on businessmen for assisting in the unimpeded customs clearance of goods imported into Ukraine. In case of refusal, entrepreneurs were threatened with artificial obstacles and delays in the registration process," the SBU press service said on Tuesday.
At the same time, the commercial cargo itself was registered by the malefactors as personal belongings of the passengers of the planes and they were not charged to the state budget. The amount of bribes depended on the number of goods and their value.
Law enforcement officers detained one of the customs officers in the act, while receiving the next tranche of bribes. In total, the businessman was demanded $4,500. At the same time, the illegal actions of other persons involved in the commission of a corruption offense were documented.
Investigative actions are currently underway, in particular, searches are being conducted at the place where the criminal offense was committed and at the place of residence of the offenders.
