SBI identifies more than 20 Berkut fighters fighting against Ukraine
KYIV. Nov 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) has established that more than 20 former policemen of the disbanded Berkut special police regiment are fighting against Ukraine as part of the Russian army or opposing Ukraine as part of the occupation law enforcement agencies, the SBI reports.
"After the start of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the SBI began checking on the collaborative activities of former special forces who fled the country after the Revolution of Dignity. The investigators of the SBI found that not only the defendants in the criminal proceedings for crimes during the Euromaidan are fighting against Ukraine, but also 20 people against whom there was not enough evidence of involvement in crimes during the Revolution of Dignity," the SBI reported on the Telegram channel on Friday.
According to the SBI, inspections of other former Berkut officers are continuing.
The Bureau’s report notes that several more people from the former special forces, also fighting against Ukraine, are already involved in a special pretrial investigation, which is at the final stage.
The SBI recalls that as part of the investigation of the Maidan cases since the beginning of 2022, despite the military actions in the country, employees of the SBI department for Maidan affairs cases reported suspicion to 46 persons involved in crimes during Euromaidan. According to the results of the work of the SBI, 23 indictments against 59 people were sent to the court in 2022.
