Saakashvili vows to continue hunger strike until he is freed
TBILISI. Oct 4 (Interfax) – Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been arrested in Georgia, has warned that he would not stop his hunger strike under any circumstances until he is freed.
"I’ve declared a hunger strike, and I won’t stop it on any account until I and the people detained because of me are freed," Saakashvili said in a letter from prison, which Nika Gvaramia, the CEO of the opposition TV channel Mtavari Arkhi, wrote to journalists near the prison in Rustavi after meeting with Saakashvili earlier on Monday.
"I didn’t want to upset my family and my loved ones, but I refused in advance from doctors’ proposals of any medical interference in case I lose conscience," Saakashvili said.
Saakashvili was detained in Tbilisi on October 1. He is currently being held in a Rustavi prison. Georgia has convicted or treated him as a suspect in several criminal cases.
