Saakashvili thanks Zelensky for support in letter from prison

TBILISI. Oct 5 (Interfax) – Mikheil Saakashvili, a former Georgian president currently serving as the head of the Executive Committee of the Ukrainian National Reform Council, who was arrested in Georgia on October 1, has thanked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his support.

Saakashvili has written a letter to Zelensky, which was posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday, saying that he is deeply touched by the Ukrainian president’s response to his "illegal detention and imprisonment in Georgia."

Saakashvili said he sees his detention as unlawful and the charges brought against him as falsified, which, as he put it, "no one recognizes in the world, except Russia."

"Georgia is the love of my life, but I adore Ukraine as well – my second homeland, where I have spent many years of my life, where I have family and friends, and I highly value being a citizen of Ukraine," Saakashvili said.

"All my life I will be proud of having the opportunity to modestly contribute to the current historical changes and reforms in Ukraine with your leadership," Saakashvili said to Zelensky in the letter.
