Russian retail chain MERE to stop operating in Ukraine – Danilov

(Paragraphs 3-7 have been added)

KYIV. Sept 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Russian retail chain MERE will stop operating in Ukraine, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksiy Danilov has said.

"I assure you that the MERE Russian retail chain will not operate in Ukraine," Danilov said during a briefing following the NSDC meeting on Friday, explaining the clarification that the stores of this chain are still operating in Bila Tserkva of Kyiv region and in Pavlohrad of Dnipropetrovsk region, despite the earlier assurances of the NSDC secretary that they would be closed.

According to him, there are several more cities in Ukraine where this trade chain operates.

Answering a question why it continues to operate, the NSDC secretary said he had addressed the mayor of Mykolaiv. "I would like to send him to Krasnoyarsk, from where these [the founders of MERE in Ukraine] came to us, so that he tried to open a chain of Ukrainian stores there and tried to work there," he said.

"In general, I think it is a shame. Mayors of cities who allow this chain to work for them, then they need to think about what they are doing there. When they say that they have nothing to do with this, you know, if you have a desire to be related, you will find how to do it. If you have a desire to close your eyes to what the Russians are doing on our territory, then you will do it," Danilov said.

According to him, "the NSDC has an understanding of how to respond to this issue." "We understand what we will do in this case. Moreover, I can say that a certain number of employees of this Russian chain came from Russia. In some amazing way, they get the opportunity to work with us. We will figure it out," the secretary said.

When asked about concrete steps in this direction, Danilov said: "You will see."

The Russian discounter chain MERE is a project of the owners of the Russian chain Svetofor.
