Russian mercenaries keeping Ukrainian teacher with Teacher of the Year award in jail for six months – ombudswoman
KYIV. Dec 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Verkhovna Rada Human Rights Commissioner Liudmyla Denisova has appealed to head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) mission in Ukraine, Florence Gillette, with a request to visit detention facility No. 5 in Donetsk and check the observance of the rights of the Ukrainian physics teacher Natalia Shylo, who has been illegally held by Russian mercenaries for six months on suspicion of allegedly spying for Ukraine.
"The woman was detained in the occupied Horlivka on June 5, 2021, where she came from Kyiv to visit her elderly mother. Only 30 days after the arrest, the teacher’s relatives were allowed to give her clothes and food … Natalia Shylo is a native of Horlivka. After the temporary occupation, she moved to Kharkiv where she worked at school and became a laureate of the city competition ‘Teacher of the Year 2018’ in the Physics category. Then Natalia moved to Kyiv," Denisova wrote on the Telegram.
The Ombudswoman also asks the head of the ICRC mission to Ukraine to check the observance of the rights of other persons held in the uncontrolled territory. According to the ombudswoman, 30 women are being illegally detained in prisons and pretrial detention centers in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, who are subjected to torture and ill-treatment. Five of them are in urgent need of medical attention due to health problems.
"I note the need to put pressure on the occupying country Russia to respect the rights of illegally imprisoned citizens of Ukraine and their immediate release," Denisova added.
