Russian gas transit through Ukraine should continue – German chancellor candidate Scholz
BERLIN. Sept 27 (Interfax) – Olaf Scholz, candidate for chancellor of Germany via the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which has won in the Bundestag elections, said he believed transit of Russian gas through Ukraine should continue following the launch of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
"It’s important that the guarantees associated with its [the gas pipeline’s] use are taken into account," Scholz told reporters in Berlin on Monday. According to him, this means Ukraine should remain a transit country.
Scholz is thus in solidarity with the position of Germany’s federal government that Berlin has voiced previously on numerous occasions.
