Russian-Belarusian exercise Zapad 2021 opens near Brest

MINSK. Sept 9 (Interfax) – The opening ceremony of the Russian-Belarusian strategic exercise Zapad (West) 2021 has been held near Brest, the Belarusian Defense Ministry said on its Telegram channel on Thursday.

"Units of the special operation forces of the Armed Forces of Belarus, the 6th separate guard mechanized brigade of the Western Operative Command and the 2nd Taman motorized infantry division of the Russian Armed Forces are participating in the exercise on the Brestsky training ground," the report said.

The exercise held near Brest will involve overcoming water obstacles, landing personnel and hardware at daytime and at night, and anti-sabotage actions.

The Zapad 2021 exercise will be conducted on training grounds in Russia and Belarus, and also in the southern part of the Baltic Sea until September 15. The maneuvers will involve some 200,000 people. A total of 2,500 Russian troops have been sent to Belarus to take part in the exercise.

Foreign contingents – some 500 troops from Armenia, India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka – have arrived for the Zapad 2021 exercise, the Western Military District said earlier.
