Russia records 20,329 COVID-19 cases, all-time high since Aug 20, some 799 deaths over past 24 hours – coronavirus response HQ
MOSCOW. Sept 18 (Interfax) – The daily growth of new COVID-19 cases in Russia has reached 20,329, and 799 people have died over the past day, the coronavirus response headquarters said in a bulletin on Saturday.
"Russia has recorded 20,329 new confirmed coronavirus cases in 85 regions over the past 24 hours, including 1,644 cases (8.1%) identified proactively, without any clinical symptoms," the bulletin said.
A recent increase in COVID-19 cases recorded daily has been noted in Russia since September 15, Saturday’s figures are comparable with the numbers recorded on August 22, 20,564 cases, and the threshold of over 20,000 cases was not crossed since then. At that time, the number of cases was decreasing following the spike in July caused by the spread of the Delta strain.
According to epidemiologists, it is a normal process for this season, when a number of cases of respiratory viral infection have started growing, and it is too early to talk about another coronavirus wave in Russia. At the same time, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko described the coronavirus situation in the country as "tense."
As many as 799 people have died from COVID-19 over the past day. Moscow recorded the highest number of deaths, 51, St. Petersburg and the Sverdlovsk region 36 each. A total of 16,247 people were discharged upon recovery.
Moscow has also recorded an increase in daily COVID-19 cases, 2,746, and it is an all-time high since August 8. As many as 1,280 people were discharged from hospitals.
An increase in number of cases has also been noted in St. Petersburg, it recorded 1,791 cases in comparison with 1,738 on September 17. The Moscow region has recorded 915 news cases over the past 24 hours in comparison to 837 as of Friday.
The cumulative number of new coronavirus cases recorded in Russia has reached 7,254,754 in the past day. Over the entire period of the pandemic, 197,425 people have died in Russia. As many as 6,485,264 patients have been discharged from hospitals.
