Russia, Kazakhstan agree to create launch complex for Soyuz-5 rockets at Baikonur
MOSCOW. Sept 16 (Interfax) – Russia’s Center for Operation of Space Ground-based Infrastructure has signed an agreement with Kazakhstan’s Basis Construction for the creation of a launch complex for Soyuz-5 rockets at Baikonur, Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin said.
"An agreement for the creation of a Baikonur launch complex to ensure launches of the brand new carrier rocket, Soyuz-5, was signed between and Basis Construction (Kazakhstan)," Rogozin said on Twitter on Thursday.
The two sides are beginning the reconstruction of the Zenit rocket launchpad for the purpose of modernization, under the Baiterek project, for the new commercial rocket being created by the Progress Space Rocket Center, he said.
The main designer of the Soyuz-5 medium-lift launch vehicle, named Irtysh, is the Energia Corporation. Its flight tests are slated for 2023. This two-stage rocket is being developed as part of the Fenix research and development project and will be powered by an RD-171MV engine. It will be launched from the former Zenit LV launch site at Baikonur Cosmodrome as a joint project with Kazakhstan. The Soyuz-5 is capable of delivering up to 17 tonnes of payload to a parking orbit.
