Russia halts shipments of thermal coal to Ukraine amid growing domestic demand in fall and winter – ministry

MOSCOW. Oct 30 (Interfax) – Russia has decided to halt shipments of thermal coal to Ukraine, as it should "attach primary importance" to satisfying domestic demand for this energy source, the Economic Development Ministry told Interfax.

"The decision has been made in view of the growing demand for thermal types of coal. During the fall and winter period, special significance should be attached to satisfying our own needs inside the country," it said.

As concerns shipments of other coal grades, Russia will ship "more than a half" of all types of coal to Ukraine in November, it said.

"Despite the political situation," Russia has remained the principal supplier of coal to Ukraine in the past few years, with the Russian suppliers accounting for "up to 68% of all coal shipped to Ukraine," the ministry said.

Andriy Gerus, head of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada energy and utilities committee, said on Friday that Russia would stop shipments of thermal coal to Ukraine starting November 1.
