Russia carries out 200 sorties, inflicts eight strikes on Ukraine on Aug 24 – AFU General Staff
KYIV. Aug 25 (Interfax-Ukraine) – On the Independence Day of Ukraine on August 24, Russia carried out 200 sorties, inflicted eight strikes on Ukraine, said spokesperson of the command of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yuriy Ihnat.
"Yesterday, despite the fact that there were such a large number of alarms, there was still no large rocket activity. But a lot of aviation activity has been recorded. More than 200 sorties were recorded during the day on August 24. The enemy mainly used long-range Tu-22M3 bombers, which carry missiles, to attack Ukraine, the main armament for them is the X-22 missile," Ihnat said at a briefing at the Ukraine Media center in Lviv on Thursday.
According to the spokesperson, eight flights of these missiles were recorded in the regions.
"The enemy also used Tornado-S multiple launch rocket systems," Ihnat added.
He drew attention to the fact that the number of alarms on August 24 is due to the fact that, in addition to missile strikes, Russia carried out many simulated sorties.
"These are departures of a group of aircraft from certain areas. Basically, this is the Shaikovka airfield for Tu-22M3, as well as the area of the North Caspian Sea for Tu-95MS aircraft. These planes took off, did certain maneuvers in the air and simulated a missile strike, which is likely," said the speaker of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Ihnat informed that around the borders of Ukraine there are more than 400 combat aircraft, 360 Russian helicopters, including more than 150 attack helicopters.
The spokesperson noted that during August 24, anti-aircraft missile units of the AFU Air Forces shot down two Ka-52 helicopters of the Russian Federation, six UAVs of the operational and tactical level of the Russian Federation.
"Our strike aircraft, under the cover of fighters, also worked in certain areas, worked on tank columns, on batteries of multiple rocket launchers, on armored vehicles, on enemy manpower. Several crossings and fuel and lubricants supply points were also hit," he said.
