Rosselkhoznadzor banning import of seeds from number of breeders in Europe, Canada starting on Aug 15

MOSCOW. Aug 15 (Interfax) – Russian agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor has banned imports of seeds from breeders in a number of European countries and Canada starting on August 15 due to non-compliance of suppliers with phytosanitary requirements.

The ban extends to imports of tomato, pepper, carrot and flower seeds from Satimex Quedlinburg GmbH (Germany), corn seeds for sowing from Limagrain Europe (France), tomato seeds from Axia Vegetable Seeds (Netherlands) and soybean seeds from Semences Prograin Inc. (Canada).

"The measures were taken due to the detection of objects subject to quarantine for Russia and EAEU member states and failure of the national plant protection organizations of Germany, France, the Netherlands and Canada to take urgent measures to ensure phytosanitary safety of products," the statement said.

Among the detected quarantine objects are potato spindle tuber viroid (can cause yield losses of up to 75% in solanaceous crops), creeping weevil (saturates fields by up to 50-80% and makes them unfit for agricultural use), corn leaf spot disease (yield losses can reach 30%), pepino mosaic virus (fruits of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, and other solanaceous vegetables lose their marketable quality), etc.
