Rights of foreigners, stateless persons wishing to serve in Ukraine's Armed Forces to be normalized – Taran

KYIV. Oct 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The government has supported the introduction of amendments to the Regulation on military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine by foreigners and stateless persons, which was put into effect by the relevant Decree of the President of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has reported.

"Now we expect the president to support the changes. The issue of military service by foreigners and stateless persons is important and can significantly increase social guarantees in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After the amendments come into force, the decree will be able to standardize the rights of foreigners and stateless persons who wish to serve in the Armed Forces of our country," Minister of Defense of Ukraine Andriy Taran said.

Thus, the document provides for the possibility for the specified persons to continue the contract from one to 10 years. Foreigners and stateless persons who entered military service without having military ranks are assigned the initial military rank of "recruit".

All subsequent military ranks of such servicemen will be granted to "master sergeant" and "chief master sergeant".

In addition, the next military rank can be awarded ahead of schedule in the order of encouragement, however, once for the entire period of military service, no earlier than the expiration of half of the established term of service in the previous military rank and subject to military service in a position for which the military rank corresponds to the duty military rank or higher.

The amendments also provide for the posthumous awarding of a military rank to servicemen who defended the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, regardless of the positions held and the length of service in the military rank.
