Rheinmetall to supply Czech Republic with Leopard 2 tanks, Büffel armored vehicles under arms exchange procedure for Ukraine – media
KYIV. Oct 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – By order of the German government, Rheinmetall will supply Leopard 2A4 battle tanks and Büffel armored recovery vehicles to the Czech Republic; the Czech armed forces, for their part, will provide military equipment to support Ukraine, German media reported, citing Rheinmetall AG.
On October 11, at the Czech Ministry of Defense in Prague, contracts were signed between the Czech and German defense departments and the leadership of Rheinmetall Business Unit Tactical Vehicles.
The cost of the order also includes ammunition and a comprehensive package of services for training and supply of spare parts.
The delivery is foreseen from December 2022 to the end of 2023. The tanks are refurbished Leopard 2A4s from stocks of various user states owned by Rheinmetall. Bergepanzer 3 Büffel is built on a redesigned Leopard 2 chassis and is the latest technology.
The exchange procedure is designed by the German federal government to support Ukraine’s efforts against the Russian invasion in cooperation with its European neighbors and NATO partners. NATO partners are transferring large ex-Soviet-made equipment to Ukraine, and in return they are receiving existing Western-made systems.
In August, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Prague had transferred 72 Soviet-made tanks to Ukraine and would receive 15 Leopard tanks from Germany in return.
