Reznikov: Territorial Defense Units to be staffed by at least 70% by end of Feb
KYIV. Jan 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Territorial Defense Units will be staffed by at least 70% by the end of February across the country, while signing of contracts with reservists in the staff of a special period has already begun, according to the website of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
“The Defense Ministry will gradually provide weapons, clothing, communications and individual armor protection to the Territorial Defense Forces… The Ministry of Defense has already sent relevant letters identifying the needs of the Territorial Defense Forces in the regions. There are also standard requirements for the arrangement of locations,” Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov said at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday, commenting on the implementation of the law On the basis of national resistance.
According to him, the department is ready to build partnerships with local authorities and self-government for the arrangement and maintenance of locations, as it involves the simultaneous deployment of 176 military units. “The very idea of Territorial Defense Forces is the coordination of the army and the community. So, in February, exercises on a regional basis are planned with the participation of heads of local authorities and self-government to work out cooperation,” Reznikov said.
The Minister reminded that the Territorial Defense Forces include the Command, four regional administrations, 25 brigades (one in each region and the city of Kyiv) and about 150 battalions (one per district). Currently, according to him, all these structures have been created and are being developed. The Territorial Defense Forces are currently being deployed on the staff of a special period. In all border regions, the teams have acquired more than 70% of skills, which allows them to perform all the necessary tasks.
It was reported that citizens will be enrolled in volunteer detachments after passing medical, professional and psychological selection, signing a contract of a territorial defense volunteer and taking the oath of a territorial defense volunteer. Volunteer formations of territorial communities will be based on citizens of Ukraine who have served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, service in other military formations and law enforcement agencies, but will also include citizens who have not served in these structures.
