Rates of export of Ukrainian agricultural crops this season will be smooth due to favorable market conditions – expert

KYIV. Dec 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The export volumes of the main agricultural crops from Ukraine in the 2021/2022 marketing year (MY, July-June) will be stable due to the trend towards an increase in grain storage capacity in the country and the desire of producers to make the most of the favorable market conditions in the world market, Ascet Shipping private port operator wrote on Facebook.

"If in the previous seasons producers tried to send most of the harvest in the first few months, and in winter and spring the transshipment volumes were falling, this season the dynamics will be smooth. We see that customers make orders for stable volumes and predict that our transshipment in the spring months will be about the same volume as in the fall," director of the Berdiansk branch Viktoria Abreyeva said.

According to her, the dynamics of cargo handling by the terminal demonstrates the transition from seasonal to stable export transshipment of grain.

"One of the reasons for the change in dynamics was the introduction of more and more capacities for storing grain. The Ukrainian producer now has such an opportunity – to wait for spring, when the supply of wheat on the market will be limited and the price will rise again," she said.

Another feature of the crop transshipment in the MY 2021/2022 was the rise in the cost of ship freight, forcing shippers to agree to more stringent conditions for the transportation of goods.

"Freight of vessels has risen in price this season by 2-2.5 times compared to the previous year. The demand for vessels is very high, the conditions are dictated by the ship owner, and the shippers are forced to adjust and agree to the terms of the charter, where the time allotted for loading is limited. Our high daily loading rates of 8,000-10,000 tonnes make it possible to meet tight deadlines," the expert said.

Ascet Shipping stevedoring company in Berdiansk (Zaporizhia region) since the beginning of the 2021/2022 season has handled 544,000 tonnes of grain cargo and loaded 89 vessels.
