Rada provides detention of servicemen who committed war crimes during martial law

KYIV. Aug 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has fixed only detention in custody as a measure of restraint for servicemen who have committed war crimes during martial law.

The adoption of relevant bill No. 7431 at second reading and as a whole was supported by 282 MPS at the plenary session on Tuesday, member of the Holos faction Yaroslav Zhelezniak said on his Telegram channel.

The document excludes the application of any other preventive measures, except for detention, to servicemen who have committed separately defined war crimes during martial law. Due to this, it is proposed to supplement the Criminal Procedure Code with a provision of the relevant content.

In addition, the bill provides that the period of validity of the ruling of the investigating judge and the court on the detention or extension of this may not exceed 30 days.

Zhelezniak also said that during the adoption of the law, parliamentarians supported an amendment to change the preventive measure for spotters.

"The [Verkhovna] Rada has changed the preventive measure procedure for spotters. Now it is impossible to get out on bail before the trial," he said.
