Rada harmonizes procedure for legal protection of geographical indications for agricultural products with EU legislation

KYIV. Sept 7 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Verkhovna Rada adopted at the final reading bill No. 5616, which synchronizes Ukrainian legislation in the field of legal protection of geographical indications for agricultural products and food products with the norms of the European Union.

The decision at a session on Tuesday was supported by 288 MPs with the minimum required 226, Taras Melnychuk, a representative of the Cabinet of Ministers in the Verkhovna Rada, wrote on his Telegram channel.

"The purpose of the bill is to ensure the fulfillment of Ukraine’s obligations in the field of European integration in harmonizing the requirements of the current legislation of Ukraine on the protection of rights to geographical indications with the EU right to comply with the rules for the protection of geographical indications for agricultural products and food staffs," Melnychuk wrote.

According to an explanatory note to the document, it proposes to introduce the concept of a traditional guaranteed feature of agricultural products, the conditions for granting legal protection to them, the concept and procedure for applying special quality indicators to them.

The bill clarifies the conditions for granting legal protection to a geographical indication for agricultural products and defines the circle of persons entitled to prepare specifications and other documents for such products.

Bill No. 5616 also establishes the procedure for coordinating specifications and other documents required for state registration of a geographical indication for agricultural products with traditional guaranteed consumer features.
