Queues of trucks to leave Ukraine for EU reach 40 km – associations of EU road carriers

VILNIUS. Nov 24 (Interfax-Ukraine/BNS) – Lithuanian and seven other European Union (EU) road carriers associations are calling for solving the problem of truck queues at the border between Ukraine and the EU, the Lithuanian national road carriers association Linava has reported.

According to the associations, at present there is a queue of more than 40 km on the Ukrainian side at one of the border points between Romania and Ukraine, more than 25 km on the Ukrainian-Hungarian border, and about 15 km on the Ukrainian-Slovak border.

Linava, together with the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and its members, have applied to the European Commission (EC) with a proposal to introduce priority border crossing lines for International Road Transport (Transports Internationaux Routiers, TIR), which will increase the number of trucks crossing the border with Ukraine by 2-3 times.

According to Linava Secretary General Zenonas Buivydas, trucks standing at the Ukrainian border can take up to several days, which, according to him, creates a number of problems for both carrier companies and truckers.

The appeal to the EC and its chairman was signed by IRU President Radu Dinescu and Secretary General Humberto de Pretto, as well as Buivydas and representatives of carriers from Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia, Slovakia, Latvia, Hungary, Turkey, Romania and Poland.
