Putin replaces commander of group in Ukraine

KYIV. Jan 11 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov has been appointed the new commander of the troops of the Russian aggressor – the United Group of Troops in Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry reports.

The former commander of the group, General Sergei Surovikin, was demoted to Deputy Gerasimov.

Other deputies of Gerasimov were Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces Oleg Salyukov and Deputy chief of the General Staff, Colonel-General Alexei Kim.

According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the "increase in the level of leadership" is associated with the expansion of the scale of tasks solved during the "special military operation", as Moscow calls the war against Ukraine, as well as the need to organize closer cooperation and "improve the quality of all types of support and management efficiency."
