Putin hopes Russia's concerns about Ukraine's possible accession to NATO will be heard
MOSCOW. Dec 8 (Interfax) – Moscow hopes that its concerns about the possible accession of Ukraine to NATO will be heard after the talks with U.S. President Joe Biden, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
"We cannot help but be concerned about the prospects of Ukraine possibly joining NATO, because this will undoubtedly be followed by the placement of relevant military contingents, bases, and weapons threatening us. I already spoke about this in general when I answered the previous question [about the talks with Biden]. In my view, I am answering your question specifically," Putin told a press conference following talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday.
"It seems to me that it will be enough to answer in this volume today: we are working on the assumption that our concerns will be heard at least this time, although we constantly talked about our concerns and asked not to do it in previous decades, but nevertheless, NATO infrastructure inevitably came closer to our borders," Putin said.
Missile defense systems are now located in Poland and Romania, he said.
"And we have every reason to believe that the same thing will happen if Ukraine joins NATO," Putin said.
