Prosecutors pass bot farm equipment worth more than UAH 1.5 mln to ARMA

KYIV. Aug 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – At the request of Sviatoshynsky District Prosecutor’s Office of Kyiv, the equipment that was used for the functioning of bot farms and cyberattacks has been transferred to the Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA) for further sale, Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office has said.

According to a Friday statement posted by the prosecutor’s office on the Telegram channel, two residents of Kyiv used telecommunications equipment to set up an underground business of providing remote access to the Internet to anonymize bot users on social media and carry out cyberattacks by hackers.

"From the beginning of the war and the blocking of access to foreign social media (Facebook, Instagram) in the Russian Federation, Russian Internet agitators started to actively use this service with the aim of bypassing the blocking and spread of anti-Ukrainian propaganda in social media allegedly on behalf of Ukrainian users," it said.

According to the prosecutor’s office, it was also established that these bot farms are related to cyberattacks on Kyiv City State Administration in February 2022.

In April 2022, under the procedural guidance of the District Prosecutor’s Office, the illegal service was blocked and its equipment was seized.

"As a result of the searches, law enforcement officers seized around 40 computers, 1,500 4G modems with SIM cards of Ukrainian mobile operators, a control server and other computer equipment worth more than UAH 1.5 million," the prosecutor’s office said.

Funds from the sale of the seized property will be transferred to the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The investigation into criminal proceedings is carried out by investigators of Sviatoshynsky Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Kyiv with operational support of the Main Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine in Kyiv and Kyiv region.
