Prosecutors General of Ukraine, USA sign Memo of Understanding to bring war criminals to justice
KYIV. Sept 21 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin met with U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland during an official visit to the United States and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with him to facilitate cooperation in bringing to justice those involved in war crimes during the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported on Wednesday.
"The Memorandum of Understanding signed today allows us to intensify our joint efforts to ensure accountability for international crimes. By establishing an official framework of cooperation, we will strengthen the effective investigation and prosecution of crimes committed by the Russian military in Ukraine, as well as ensure justice for the victims," Kostin stressed.
According to the report, the Memorandum will contribute to improving the effectiveness of investigations and prosecutions in accordance with national legislation, removing barriers to timely and effective exchange of information and evidence between the two countries, as well as facilitating technical cooperation.
The United States supports the people of Ukraine in their tireless quest to respect the rule of law and seek justice for those affected by the ongoing Russian aggression. Today, the Department of Justice and the Office of the Prosecutor General announced our decision to work more closely to identify, detain and bring to justice those involved in war crimes and other atrocities in Ukraine. We will be uncompromising on these issues, Garland said.
Kostin expressed readiness to establish close cooperation with the Task Force KleptoCapture (TFKC) Group, created by the U.S. Department of Justice, authorized to use bodies that confiscate assets in civil and criminal proceedings to seize assets of sanctioned persons or assets identified as proceeds from illegal activities. Since its creation, the Group has, in particular, facilitated the arrest and confiscation of assets such as yachts and planes of sanctioned persons with close ties to the Russian authorities, eliminated Russian criminal networks and enforced sanctions.
"We must act together to prove that war criminals cannot hide. The war crimes of the Russian Federation will be investigated, their perpetrators will be punished," Kostin summed up.
