Prosecutor General: Creation of special intl tribunal is core issue for Ukraine
KYIV. Sept 7 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The creation of a special international tribunal to bring to justice the highest military and political leadership of the Russian Federation is a central issue for Ukraine, and international partners are open to discussing this possibility, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) notes.
A message, posted on the Telegram channel of the Prosecutor General’s Office on Wednesday, says that Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin held an online meeting with European Commissioner Didier Reynders to discuss further steps in cooperation to bring to justice those responsible for war crimes and aggression against Ukraine.
According to Kostin, Ukraine’s "weapon" on the legal front is the unconditional evidence of war crimes collected during the investigation with the support of international partners.
"I stressed once again that the creation of a special international tribunal to bring to justice the highest military and political leadership of the aggressor is a central issue for Ukraine. The European Commissioner assured that he was open to discussing this possibility. He added that some consultations with experts are already underway," the Prosecutor General stressed.
Also, as the message says, Kostin and Reynders noted that it is necessary to use all available tools to restore justice and global law and order.
"National investigations in Ukraine and other countries, a joint investigation team, Task Force for the search, arrest and confiscation of assets, expert groups and cooperation with the International Criminal Court should move in the same direction," the report says, quoting the Prosecutor General as saying.
In addition, the Prosecutor General and the European Commissioner discussed concrete steps to intensify the arrest and confiscation in favor of Ukraine of the assets of the Russian leadership and oligarchs involved in the aggression in Ukraine.
"I agree with Reynders’ opinion that comprehensive prosecution of the aggressor will prevent the recurrence of aggression in the future. I am also sure that this will allow the civilized world to show the aggressor that law prevails over force. We are waiting for the visit of the European Commissioner to Ukraine," Kostin summed up.
