PrivatBank completes service of Israel claim on ex-owners of bank in Ukraine
KYIV. Aug 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Pursuant to an order of the Israeli Court dated April 26, 2021, PrivatBank (Kyiv) has completed the service of the Israel claim on Ihor Kolomoisky and Hennadiy Boholiubov, as well as on other defendant Viacheslav Kartashov (a longstanding confidant of theirs and currently the Head of the Department for Legal Affairs of PJSC Ukrnafta), under the Hague Convention on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters, the bank’s press service reported on Friday.
"Under the requirements of the Court Order, the Bank was required to publish the service notice relating to each of the defendants on five separate occasions. This has now been completed, with the final service notice in respect of each defendant being published in Holos Ukrainy on 26 August 2021," the bank said.
As reported, according to Israeli law, the bank is obliged to publish the notices five times to oblige the defendants to submit their response within 60 days from the moment of the last publication.
Earlier PrivatBank brought proceedings before the District Court of Tel-Aviv-Jaffa, Israel, against its former owners and other defendants for their alleged acts of fraud, misappropriation and money laundering by which at least $600 million (approx. UAH 16.5 billion) is claimed to have been unlawfully extracted from the Bank between 2007 and 2011 and transferred to a bank account held with Israel Discount Bank.
The government of Ukraine, referring to the proposal of the National Bank and former shareholders of PrivatBank, on December 18, 2016 decided to nationalize this largest financial institution on the Ukrainian market and injected over UAH 155 billion into its capital.
According to statistics from the National Bank of Ukraine, as of June 1, 2021, PrivatBank was ranked first in terms of total assets (UAH 550.58 billion) among 73 banks operating in the country.
