President's Office expects appointment of Ethics Council's members by Council of Judges until Oct – Yermak
KYIV. Sept 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The President’s Office of Ukraine is awaiting the appointment by the Council of Judges according to their quota of the members of the Ethics Council and the start of the work of the competition committee to select the members of the High Qualification Commission of Judges as soon as possible.
"Most of all, we look forward to the appointment by the Council of Judges according to its quota of members of the Ethics Council, with the participation of international experts, which should play a key role in the formation of the High Council of Justice. It is important that this happens as soon as possible, highly desirable, before the beginning of October. Then, in parallel, there will be a competitive selection for vacant positions and verification of the current members of the Verkhovna Rada," Head of the President’s Office Andriy Yermak told Interfax-Ukraine, commenting the Thursday’s meeting, at which issues of judicial reform were discussed.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Verkhovna Rada, the government of Ukraine, heads of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention, the Supreme Court and the Council of Judges, G7 Ambassadors and the European Union in Ukraine.
"We are grateful to our international partners and the Council of Judges for nominating candidates to the competition commission for selecting members of the High Qualification Commission of Judges. We hope that the competition committee will also start working in the near future," the head of the President’s Office said.
"I want to emphasize that on the basis of the Commission on Legal Reform under the President of Ukraine, a platform will work on an ongoing basis for the implementation of changes in legislation, discussion and development of necessary decisions related to this process. The President of Ukraine is extremely interested in the maximum acceleration of the judicial reform, because an effective judicial system is the most important factor for the development of our country," Yermak said.
