Potato production in Ukraine decreases by 13% in ten years – Agriculture Minister

KYIV. Aug 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Potato production in Ukraine over the past ten years has decreased by 13.3%, from 24,000 tonnes to 20,800 tonnes, today the country ranks fourth in the world in gross potato production, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Roman Leschenko said at a press conference in Kherson region.

"Our state must take a clear leadership in the issue of potato production. The fourth place in the world is not our maximum, I know that we can do more. And the fact that our neighbors are trying to conquer our market with various import mechanisms only strengthens our understanding that we need to move faster," he said.

According to the minister, the working group of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, consisting of representatives of this department, as well as the Ministry of Economy, the State Service on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences, the Ukrainian Association of Potato Producers and the Ukrainian Horticultural Association, has already developed a draft procedure for the use of budget funds for state support for potato producers. The minister specified that the document is currently undergoing a legal examination at the Ministry of Justice, after which it will be sent to the government for consideration.

Leschenko stressed that the project provides for state support for agricultural producers and irrevocable compensation of up to 50% of the cost (excluding VAT) of building refrigerators for storing independently grown potatoes (potato storages), as well as workshops for its primary processing.

According to him, the draft procedure for using funds to support this industry will create conditions for the development of potato growing in Ukraine, provide Ukrainians with potatoes and potato products, and the launch of the state support program will help stabilize prices for this product within a year.
