Poroshenko advises Zelensky to establish good personal relationship with Biden

KYIV. Aug 30 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Fifth President of Ukraine, MP (from the European Solidarity faction) Petro Poroshenko recorded a video statement to President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he advised the current head of state during his visit to Washington to establish good personal relations with U.S. President Joe Biden.

"The most important thing is to establish a good personal relationship of trust with the head of the White House. At least at the level that existed during my cadence. Only a competent, sincere, clear and constructive position of the real leader of the country. Without raised tones and questions like ‘why is Ukraine still not in NATO?’ This is an important prerequisite for the success of the meeting," Poroshenko said.

He said that, during a meeting with Biden, Zelensky should reaffirm Ukraine’s determination to deepen strategic partnership and alliance with the United States and "finally launch the mechanisms of the Strategic Partnership Commission."

"We are talking about important components of strengthening Ukraine’s stability in repulsing the Russian aggressor by concluding a security deal, coordinating efforts to advance on the path to NATO membership, expanding the range of lethal defense weapons and military and technical cooperation," the fifth president said.

Poroshenko also said that Zelensky must convince the U.S. officials and big business of the sincerity and effectiveness of Bankova Street in the implementation of democratic and socio-economic reforms in Ukraine and, first of all, in the fight against corruption.

"What is really important for serious foreign business is not Bankova’s ‘nannies’ or verbal quasi-guarantees, but first of all the rule of law and ensuring the independence of justice, law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies, and the banking sector in Ukraine," the MP said.

He said that during his visit to the United States, the President of Ukraine should also focus on discussing energy security issues, clarify his position regarding former owner of PrivatBank Igor Kolomoisky, which is under U.S. sanctions, and the case of the Wagner members, as well as present developments Crimean platform and involve the UN in international efforts to de-occupy Crimea.
