Polish Prime Minister expects Europe to send up to 100 tanks to Ukraine

KYIV. Jan 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Warsaw expects European countries to send as many as 100 battle tanks to Ukraine, Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

"Poland expects European allies to send as many as 100 battle tanks to support Ukraine’s defense efforts against Russia’s invasion, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said," Bloomberg reports.

"I spoke to Olaf [Scholz] several weeks ago and tried to encourage him to do more. We have earmarked our 14 Leopards tanks and now we wait also for Leopards from Denmark, Finland, and Germany and tanks from other countries from the EU," Morawiecki told Bloomberg.

The day before, Scholz said that he was negotiating with the allies about the possible supply of Leopard tanks to Ukraine, but specified that Germany would announce any decisions on this matter only together with other countries.

Bloomberg recalled that 12 other European countries have Leopards in their arsenals, but they need Berlin’s approval before they can transfer the tanks.

Earlier this week it was reported that the UK would give Ukraine its most substantial military aid package, which will include Challenger 2 tanks and AS-90 self-propelled artillery mounts. Prior to this, the Elysee Palace announced that French President Emmanuel Macron promised to supply Kyiv with French-made tanks. The French media said that it was about AMX-10 RC vehicles – armoured fighting vehicles, also classified as wheeled tanks.

In turn, President of the European Council Charles Michel said that he supports plans to supply tanks to Ukraine.
