Police detain killer of policewoman in Chernivtsi, perpetrator is dead – National Police Chief

KYIV. Oct 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The police of Chernivtsi region have detained a man, who was accused of molesting minors and who shot at patrol police officers in Chernivtsi on October 3, as a result of which one policewoman was killed and one policeman was wounded, Chief of the National Police of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko said.

"During the detention, the perpetrator opened fire, that is why the police shot in response. The detainee was wounded, he is receiving medical aid. More updates will be provided soon," he said on Facebook on Wednesday.

Klymenko recalled that the 22-year-old patrol policewoman, Second Lieutenant Taisia Tataryn was killed and her partner was hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

Later, the National Police reported that the man died.

"The detainee has died. He was 53. A native of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, registered in Zhytomyr region," the police said on the Telegram channel.

As reported, on October 3, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Kyrylo Tymoshenko said that one policewoman was killed and one policeman was wounded during an operation to detain a man accused of molesting minors.

"Chernivtsi. An emergency. The National Police were detaining a person accused of molesting minors. One policewoman killed, one policeman wounded. The suspect is hiding in a multi-apartment building," he said on the Telegram channel.
