Poland, Slovakia complete construction of interconnector between countries

KYIV. Aug 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Poland and Slovakia have completed the construction of a 164 km gas pipeline link between the countries, which will allow transporting 5.7 billion cubic meters per year to Poland and 4.7 billion cubic meters to Slovakia.

According to the operators Gaz-System and Eustream, the planned date for the start of commercial operation of the interconnector is October 2022.

Poland will receive infrastructural access to gas sources located in Southern Europe, North Africa and the Caucasus. Slovakia will get access to gas from Baltic Pipe (Norwegian shelf), LNG terminal in Swinoujscie and LNG terminal in Klaipeda.

"The commissioning of the gas pipeline marks the completion of a large-scale project in Poland called the North-South Gas Corridor," Gaz-System said.

In turn, Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) said that with the commissioning of the interconnector, Ukrainian traders now have access to extended access to LNG terminals in Poland and the Baltics. After the launch of the gas pipeline, Ukraine will be able to import almost 13 million cubic meters of gas per day from Poland through Slovakia.

"Thanks to ten years of strategic work – the construction of LNG terminals, interconnectors, the Baltic Pipe project – Poland is becoming a gas hub of North-Eastern Europe. We see the diversification of sources and routes. This is a significant contribution to the energy security of the region. For its part, for further strengthening Ukraine can offer our partners access to underground gas storage facilities, gas transit over short distances between the countries of North-Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, integration of decarbonized gases for the needs of the industry," GTSOU Director General Serhiy Makogon said.
