PMC Wagner loses significant amount of manpower in Bakhmut – ISW
KYIV. March 31 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Wagner PMC and the Russian army are likely to have lost a significant amount of manpower in the Bakhmut area, which will further deter Russia’s advance on Bakhmut, according to a report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
PMC Wagner sent the vast majority of its fighters to support the attack on Bakhmut, but suffered significant losses in the battles for the city.
Ian Stubbs, senior military adviser to the United Kingdom mission to the OSCE, said that after the battles in the Bakhmut area, 30,000 Russian soldiers and PMC Wagner members were killed or wounded. They urgently need to replenish their personnel.
The ISW assumes that these losses in manpower will continue to deter Russian offensive operations both in the Bakhmut region and in other directions. Going forward, significant Wagner losses are likely to threaten their ability to maintain their influential role among the Russian forces fighting in Ukraine.
