PM urges thermal power workers to look for alternative fuel to gas, improve energy efficiency of networks
KYIV. Oct 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine should seriously approach the issue of using alternative gas sources for heat generation, energy efficiency and energy saving, in particular, in heating networks and households, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has said.
"Is not now the best time to think about energy efficiency and energy saving? These are the ways that will give us the opportunity to go through the next heating seasons with less stress," the prime minister said at a meeting of the presidium of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Odesa on Friday.
As an example, he cited Volyn region and, with reference to the head of the Regional State Administration, said that in Volyn over half of the state-funded boilers operate on alternative fuels, in particular on pellets.
"There is an alternative and a calm passage of the heating season. Surely, tense, but without stress and without the risk that something will be disrupted," Shmyhal said.
He also recalled the initiative of the President of Ukraine from next year to start a major energy efficiency and energy saving program, aimed, in particular, at the energy modernization of large households and heating networks.
"The implementation of the program will lead to significant savings. According to the Economy Ministry, by implementing energy-efficient measures for the utilities sector, we can save up to $1.5 billion a year. This is a decrease in losses in heating networks, houses. These are the areas that are worth start discussing in order to implement them next summer and calmly enter the next heating season," the head of government said.
