Opposition seeks to cause transport collapse in Tbilisi

TBILISI. Nov 15 (Interfax) – Participants in a protest organized by the Georgian opposition party United National Movement are planning to block the traffic on both sides of the Kura River for two hours, creating a threat of transport collapse in Tbilisi.

"Our action is peaceful. We demand that the authorities listen to the opinion of doctors and transfer Mikheil Saakashvili to a civilian clinic," party co-leader Nikanor Melia said.

The protesters are gathering near the Avlabari metro station in Tbilisi, an Interfax correspondent has reported from the ground.

The Georgian Interior Ministry said on Monday that the opposition protest of November 15 aimed to block the traffic in Tbilisi and reminded the rally organizers that, in the event of a transport collapse in the capital, the organization of group actions flagrantly breaching the public peace would be regarded as a criminal offense, consistent with Georgian laws. Such actions are penalized with up to three years in prison.

Protesters are still preparing to move towards the embankments, the Interfax correspondent reported. The organizers are waiting for more protesters to join in.
