Normandy format should consider issues of Nord Stream, gas transit through Ukraine – Yermak

KYIV. Sept 11 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The issue of Nord Stream 2 and the transit of Russian gas through the Ukrainian territory should be submitted to the Normandy format for consideration, as it relates to the security of Ukraine, Head of the President’s Office of Ukraine Andriy Yermak said.

"We view the Nord Stream issue solely as an issue of the general security of Ukraine. […]Therefore, we have already several times, I am talking about this with my colleagues during videoconferences in the Normandy format, we consider it absolutely logical to add to the important issues of a ceasefire, a general settlement of the conflict, to the Normandy format, consideration of these issues," Yermak said at the YES Brainstorming conference in Kyiv on Saturday.

He said the preservation of gas transit from Russia through Ukraine is a fuse that holds back a possible large-scale aggression from Russia.

"I think that the continuation of gas transit is a very serious safety factor, including the large-scale aggression of Russia against Ukraine. And the president spoke here yesterday about its risks [about the risks of aggression] and the probabilities. Well, when about 100,000 Russian servicemen are built up near our borders, I think any reasonable person will see such risks in this," Yermak said.

"Therefore, returning to the general political issue of Nord Stream, I believe that there is a full opportunity for our colleagues to support Ukraine’s position regarding the consideration of this issue in the Normandy format, regarding the involvement of the United States in resolving the conflict and ending the war in Donbas," he said.
